Broken or Fragmented!

I have heard from clients many times, "I just feel broken," and this always feels such a powerful statement for someone to make. There is no doubt that this is how it can feel sometimes when you just feel as though you have been through so much emotional (and sometimes physical pain). When I saw the beauty of the Aurora Borealis last night, it made me think about this some more and the times I have felt this way. It can be exhausting.

The Aurora comes about due to charged particles, tiny fragments of the sun, hitting gases in the Earth’s atmosphere, that we are able to see when the conditions are right.

Perhaps, when we feel broken, we are not broken at all, but more fragmented - and therefore we too are even more beautiful when all of our pain can be seen. This for me sums up one of the reasons counselling can be so successful for people. Being offered kindness, empathy, truly listened to and 'seen', not judged is a power in its own right and should not be underestimated.
